Easthampton City Arts+ is proud to announce the acceptance of a mural proposal by artist Nancy Howard Smith. Located at the corner of Union Street and Chapman Avenue on the building wall of Manchester True Value Hardware in Easthampton, the mural acquired its first color in late July. Onlookers can now see a shadowy mill skyline in the background with colorful daffodils in the foreground. Smith will put the finishing touches on the mural by the end of August and there will be a celebration of the mural's completion and symbolic unveiling on September 10, 2011, followed by the September Art Walk Easthampton.
A committee of artists and art enthusiasts selected Smith's mural proposal from a dozen of creative entries. Denise Riggs, co-facilitator of the ECA+ Coordinating Committee says, “The mural's design speaks to Easthampton's culture, building upon its history, and at the same time growing and revitalization.”
Holyoke artist Nancy Howard Smith has shown in numerous galleries in Easthampton and the surrounding area. Most recently she exhibited at Gallery 380 in Holyoke, the Oxbow Gallery in Northampton, and the Nashwannuck gallery in Easthampton where she was awarded “Best Watercolor” for the Nashwannuck Easthampton Paint out-a plein air painting competition. Her watercolors preface color and landscapes much influenced with her background in landscape architecture and painting. Smith holds a BFA from RISD and an MLA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She says, “From my perspective painting and landscape design continue to overlap in many ways. A sense of a specific place, and the unique character of a given community, interest me as a designer, event planner, and as an artist.”
Funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Manchester True Value Hardware donated the highly visible mural location and Easthampton Savings Bank, Robinson Properties, and Big E's Supermarket made this project possible with their support.
