Suzette Alsop Jones will exhibit “On the Wing” in the Easthampton City Arts+ gallery from September 9 through October 5, 2011. An artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, September 10, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. during Art Walk Easthampton.
Jones’ oil paintings exhibited in this show capture the energetic movements of birds. Colorfully painted, Jones enlarges her subject matter on the canvas exemplifying the beauty of the small animals. Wherever the artist traverses while looking for birds, she is lead deep into thickets carefully observing the local environment. Jones, who also paints landscapes and flowers, explains her interest in studying nature, “I see and hear fewer songbirds now, and I worry about disappearing habitats and toxic pesticides. Birds are small, and I somehow feel the need to paint them larger so people notice how beautiful they are and appreciate their important roles in our ecosystems before it is too late,” she says.
Suzette Alsop Jones received her BA in European History at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, and an MFA in printmaking and painting at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught visual art and art history at Putney School, Choate Rosemary Hall School, and Dana Hall School. Jones has exhibited extensively in galleries throughout New England including at the Paul Mellon Arts Center, the Nashawannuck Gallery, and ArtSpace.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. The ECA+ gallery is located at 43 Main Street, Easthampton, MA.
