| Paint Out Artists in the Orchard |
The Pioneer Valley has a long tradition of painters capturing the local landscape. In its 4th annual year the Easthampton Paint Out continues this tradition encouraging painters to pack up their studio and embrace the open air for inspiration. Hosted by the Nashawannuck Gallery, this annual event challenges painters en plein air for a week. In order to qualify, artists begin with blank canvases that are stamped by the Nashawannuck Gallery--they are then entrusted to paint within the Easthampton city limits.
The participating artists have chosen various locations around the city, embarking on both urban landscapes while others have selected the more rural Mount Tom skyline. Following the deadline for delivery of the paintings on Saturday, September 10 to the Nashawannuck gallery, the works will be judged and awarded a series of prizes including Best Watercolor and Best Oil Painting. Easthampton Savings Bank, a sponsor of the event will purchase two paintings from the participating artists.
Artist, Michael MacTavish, a four year veteran of the Easthampton Paint Out says, “There is an extra charge of excitement for me at the opening with many of the paintings just completed and still wet.” MacTavish has sold at least one painting each year during the Paint Out exhibition. A professional landscape painter, MacTavish sees the competition as more than just an experience for artists but also sees it as an exciting event for viewers. “It’s free entertainment for a passerby to view a painter trying to focus while being seduced by the ever changing light. Because of it, there are more images of our fair city interpreted by artists,” MacTavish says.
The Easthampton Paint Out exhibit begins at 5:00 p.m. on September 10, during Art Walk Easthampton and runs through September 24 at the Nashwannuck gallery located at 40 Cottage Street in Easthampton. This exhibit is free and open to the public.
